What it is

Browser extensions such as Honey and coupon sites such as RetailMeNot collect discount codes and offer them to shoppers at checkout. The shopper didn’t come for a deal; the deal found them.

Once a code is on those lists, it keeps being applied until it stops working. The bigger the discount, the more it costs you.

Why it costs money

The discount goes to shoppers who had already decided to buy. You lose margin without gaining a sale. The discount goes to shoppers who had already decided to buy.

How we find it

We see the effect in your orders: a code running far above its usual rate, and orders whose visit came from known coupon and cashback sites, including Honey, RetailMeNot, Rakuten and Capital One Shopping. We see it in your orders: code spikes and visits from coupon sites.

How you fix it

Pause the code, or add a usage limit so it stops by itself, in one click on Pro and Autopilot. Then give the real audience a fresh code.Pause the code or cap it in one click, then send a fresh one.

What we do, and don’t

  • We don’t block browser extensions, and we don’t see inside a shopper’s browser
  • We show which codes are affected and what they cost
  • We make it one click to pause or cap those codes
  • Your customers’ names and emails are never stored

Common questions.

Can you stop Honey from running on my store?
No. An extension runs in the shopper’s browser. What you control is whether your codes keep working, and that’s what CheckoutLeak helps with.
How do I tell an extension from a normal shopper?
We don’t look at individual shoppers. We look at each code’s overall pattern and at where its orders came from.
What should I do after pausing a code?
Send your real audience a new code, ideally with a usage limit or one use per customer.
